I don’t even know how to write this. Just when I thought all looked well for a summer of relaxation, yet another bomb gets dropped.

I had an unsettling call from our neurosurgeon this morning, and I’m still reeling. Gavin has quite a large bulge on the back of his head where his skull doesn’t quite close. The surgeons were unable to repair it entirely after last year’s surgery. There has been speculation about what has been causing this bulge, the most likely candidate being fluid. However, since all seemed well, we all agreed to leave well enough alone.

Unfortunately, it appears from this latest scan that a small part of Gavin’s brain is growing outside of his skull. What this yet means, we don’t know. Our neurosurgeon has not seen this before, so it is quite unusual. We don’t yet know what our options will be, and although Dr. Dirks was quick to assure me that this is not an emergency scenario, it very much feels like an emergency scenario.

I am in complete shock. We are meeting with Dr. Dirks tomorrow morning to discuss the options and potential risks. I feel sick thinking about it.

Will post tomorrow with the outcome. Please keep us in your hearts and prayers tonight.
